Sticker Book Design

RESEARCH

= Girls specific sticker sports book revolves around dress up and fashion ??

= Other sticker sport books have only men pictured on the cover and in the stickers (presumably it is for boys about boys)
= Inside has settings of different sports to which the reader places the correct stickers
= Want my sticker book to reflect the abstract design of the flags for visual consistency
= Instead of narrative, it should have facts about women and sport and the olympics that can be understood from a range of ages

= Typical age for sticker book readers = 7-11 years old
= Those younger who could have it bought for them will at least be playing with stickers of female sport players

= Stickers available in relation to Olympics centred around symbols and places where it was held
= Market gap for sticker books about sport depicting women and interesting stickers of players

INSIDE DESIGN

= With real book every double page would be every sport involved
= Facts revolve around the Olympics, each sport and women involvement
= Last pages = stickers = These can be printed on = Add lines on this spread for some background decoration?
= Very simple = Is it interesting enough for kids?

COVERS

= Wanted to keep the design simple but if it's for children the outside needs to seem exciting = hence the use of some of the illustrations on the back cover
= Colour choice is difficult as it should be vivid contrasting colours but also relevant to olympics and sport
= the dark green and purple feels somewhat too relevant to wimbledon and tennis rather than overall sports
= Blues, white and red would be most appropriate in reflecting Britain in the olympics, but these colours feel dull and don't follow the aesthetic within the book or on the flags
= Perhaps the most interesting is just to implement the flag design onto the book = gives it a continuous feel with the tennis ball on the front and back

PEER FEEDBACK:

- Size of an A4 book means the stickers feel a bit too big
= Make them smaller and add in more?
= Instead of having to make more could just change the colours of original stickers of balls

- 2nd and last covers are most impactful for a child with the decorations and colour choices
- final design best in terms of layout as it has the most ongoing on and therefore would be the most interesting and fun for children

FLAG PRINTING
= All Flags at A1 online printing = £70
= Print just one in real size or make all of them smaller?
= If they are smaller young children can hold them, but when hung they may have less impact
= For printing purposes during lock down it is more expensive than it would be so printing smaller is practical for photos = A2?

CHANGES AND FINAL DEVELOPMENTS IN STICKER BOOK

= Second spread perhaps too plain for the rest of the book = perhaps I can adopt the same line aesthetic used for the sticker spread decoration?
= Introductory paragraph not written for children, who would not pay attention to this
= Most children will miss this but the parent will read it which will inform them of the tone of the book and therefore what it is about and whether they would want to buy it
= Have not made it too predominant that the focus is on women in sport, but more equally about sports, olympics and women
= This means there will hopefully be boy interest which will help tackle the problem from both sides

PAGE TWO DEVELOPMENT

= Had the lines continue from the cover into the inside of the cover and first page and then added the decoration from the sticker spread but this was messy and didn't follow the smooth movement feel of the other lines usage design on other pages
= Made it more refined = represents the skill and precise quality to sport and its skill
= All in one colour for visual consistency

PRODUCTION

= Printing online and delivered here or mock up?
= Would like to see it physically, as I can then evaluate to see if it is practical for children

STICKER PRINTING SERVICES
= Really expensive for small amounts of stickers
= Good experience in doing this for later on as there will not always be convenient services like at the uni in later life
= Need to work on producing designs in a way that they can automatically be physically produced, instead of doing things quickly and easily which means I have to patch it up later
eg. Hadn't added in white backgrounds to the outlines of each sticker, which meant when I added the decoration on the sticker spread the lines would be printed onto the stickers
eg. Moved everything onto indesign for layout which meant working with this in changing the stickers was more difficult

Production Problems

As looking for alternative printing methods was the only way to produce the outcomes physically, the sticker pages were created and sent off...
