= playful
= powerful
= colourful
= eye-catching
= movement
= strong forms
= bright colours
= sharp lines
= should present a woman doing the sport = important
= Bright colours = but Minimal palette for each flag
= Having a set number of colours for each one will mean they all stand out individually as different sports but also have visual consistency altogether with the same layout and choice of three/four colours
= Main colour associations with each sport
= Canoeing = BLUE/GREEN (water)
= boys in the water as orange and white but does not have particular prominence
= Tennis = GREEN/YELLOW
= But for each Olympic Game I can see it changes = eg. Bejing was blue, Rio was green and some are purple?
Color of Tennis Court
= Doesn't seem to have specific colours that stand out = just the definite green field every time
= Perhaps green should be assigned to rugby then?
= Or am I only associating colours to each game on how it feels? Pink and orange are very intense colours which would reflect the intensity of the game
= Colours can always be played around with once the illustrations are made and vectored
-----------------------------------------------
TENNIS ILLUSTRATION FLAG DEVELOPMENT
= Initially had a different picture to make the illustration from but wanted to have diversity within the range of flags
= As Serena is an important female figure in tennis using her figure made sense
= Keeping it simple with no facial features, I played around with adding just eyebrows for a sort of serious look, but felt that these could be misinterpreted as eyes and make it look odd
= As I progressed in creating the illustration, I felt I was adding more detail and shades
= This was not necessarily what I had been aiming for at the start, but it worked well as the rest of the flag is not very detailed
= The detail also makes the woman become the focus, and presents her as a very strong figure
= The colours and the layout feels very professional and realistic, and I want to platy around with different colours to see if this changes the tone and makes it more playful
= Olympic Rings consistent with rest of flag and therefore feels more purposeful in design through same colour choice
= Brought out the lines in the tennis ball around the woman to bring further focus to her
= The lines also reflect the court grid lines and create a sense of movement
= They also follow my initial sketch designs, which place emphasis on making the flag look and feel like a traditional 'nation's' flag, rather than just an image on fabric
= The pink background and purple shadow+lines feels unique compared to the green colours used earlier
= Didn't want the pink to feel like a 'woman' focus so I darkened it
= White stroke brings out the woman as well but feels a bit messy
= Although these flags would be digitally printed in order to mass produce them, it might be interesting to see how it would look if hand made?
= The different thread colours coming out could either look messy or provide this human element to the outcome?
= But with the Olympics as a universal, professional, sleek event, not sure this would reflect it appropriately
= Will have to look into services that can print this flag off
= Instead of the purple pink shade taking prominence, this feels less feminine (or does it?)
= Colours could be up for discussion in the peer crit end of this week
TO DO:
- Other two initial ideas
- Peer crit and further primary research with these to decide which should be progressed to the final three flags
